WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are highly concentrated aromatic extracts obtained from different parts of plants, including flowers, leaves, fruits, seeds, bark and roots.

The method of extraction depends on the plant and the characteristics of the oil. Common methods include steam distillation and cold pressing, while some delicate botanical materials are processed using other specialised extraction methods.

Each essential oil has its own distinctive aroma and chemical composition, making every botanical essence unique.

ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY

Essential oils are highly concentrated substances and should always be handled with care.

Never ingest essential oils unless specifically directed by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
Do not apply essential oils directly to the skin unless they have been appropriately diluted and the particular oil is suitable for topical use.
Essential oils can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some people.
Keep essential oils away from the eyes and mucous membranes.
Keep bottles safely out of reach of children.
Keep essential oils away from heat, hot surfaces and open flames.
Certain citrus essential oils can increase photosensitivity when applied to the skin.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, have a medical condition or are using essential oils with children, seek appropriate professional advice before use.

A NOTE ABOUT DILUTION

There is no single dilution that is appropriate for every person, oil or application.

The appropriate dilution depends on factors such as the essential oil, intended use, age and individual circumstances. For topical applications, always follow the specific product instructions and use an appropriate dilution.

ESSENTIAL OILS & PETS

Extra care is needed when using essential oils around animals.

Concentrated essential oils can be harmful to pets, and sensitivity varies between species and individual animals. Cats, in particular, can be especially vulnerable to essential-oil exposure.

If you have pets, keep essential oils and products containing them safely out of reach. Use diffusers and scented products cautiously, ensure your pet can leave the area, and avoid direct application to animals.

Birds and animals with respiratory conditions may require additional precautions. If you are unsure whether an essential oil or aromatic product is appropriate for your pet, consult your veterinarian.

CARING FOR YOUR ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils can gradually oxidise over time, particularly when exposed to air, heat and light.

To help preserve their quality:

Keep bottles tightly closed.
Store them away from direct sunlight.
Keep them somewhere cool and dry.
Avoid unnecessary exposure to heat.
Record the date you open a bottle so you can monitor its age.

Shelf life varies considerably between individual essential oils. Citrus oils, for example, can oxidise more quickly than some other oils, so always follow the manufacturer's storage and usage guidance.

NATURALLY OCCURRING ALLERGENS

Essential oils naturally contain aromatic compounds that are recognised as fragrance allergens.

Depending on the essential oil or fragrance composition, these may include:

Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Geraniol, Citronellol, Eugenol, Coumarin, Isoeugenol, Cinnamal, Cinnamyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Farnesol, Anisyl Alcohol and Benzyl Cinnamate.

The presence of naturally occurring allergens does not mean an ingredient is synthetic. They occur naturally in many essential oils and botanical extracts.

Always check the individual product label for the ingredients and allergen information relevant to that product.
